Last month, two visitors to Seaside were the targets of a vicious hate crime. They were beaten by four strangers and left unconscious on the beach. Although Oregon has comprehensive hate crimes legislation, many states do not.

Join us in calling upon the Oregon legislature to condemn these attacks, and to send a message to Congress: pass the Matthew Shepard Act NOW. The Matthew Shepard Act would ban anti-gay and anti-transgender hate crimes from coast to coast.

As your constituent, I am writing to strongly urge you to support HJM 22.

Last month, two men were viciously attacked in Seaside simply because they are gay. Thankfully, state law protects gay and transgender Oregonians from hate crimes, but many states do not.

HJM 22 would condemn the attacks in Seaside and call upon Congress to pass the Matthew Shepard Act, which would ban violent acts against gay and transgender Americans from coast to coast. All of us deserve to live free from the threat of violence. Please vote YES on HJM 22.
