Second Parent Adoption Bill Passes State House Committee on Judiciary

State Representative Paul Condino introduced HB 4259 in February, this bill would allow unmarried couples to jointly adopt children. As it stands now, only single people and married couples can adopt children in Michigan. Couples who choose not to marry - or gay couples who are not permitted to marry - cannot.

State Rep. Paul Condino wants to amend the state's adoption code to change that. He says critics who insist that children should not be adopted by same-sex couples are ignoring the reality that single people can already adopt - whether they're gay or straight. Condino says joint adoptions by unmarried couples would help ensure more complete health coverage, financial support, and stability for adopted children.

Today, HB 4259 passed the House Judiciary Committee by a vote of 8-5. Soon it will be voted on by the full House.

Subject:
Vote YES! on HB 4259 - Second Parent Adoption

Dear [ Decision Maker ],

I urge you to support second parent adoption in Michigan by voting yes on HB 4259. All children deserve the financial, legal, and emotional security of TWO parents, regardless of the parents' marital status. This bill ensures that children will be provided with the financial support, medical insurance, social security and pension benefits and medical authorizations by both parents.

In addition, this bill will provide savings to Michigan's taxpayers by decreasing the number of children in temporary foster homes and facilities, and by decreasing the number of children relying on Medicaid.

Please protect and strengthen Michigan families by supporting this bill.

Sincerely,
[Your name]
