Historic KCHR Resolution
Icon

As the Commission's resolution reminds us, Kentucky has long been an engaged participant in the civil rights movement beginning with the passage of the first statewide fair housing law in 1968. Great progress is continuing to be made today and in 2008 the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community has certainly seen victories. So far this year, we’ve seen:

  • Passage of an inclusive non-discrimination policy at Murray State University in western Kentucky making for inclusion at all of our public institutions of higher education;

  • Fairness grow in the Kentucky legislature with the introduction of the Hospital Visitation Bill in the House by Rep. Mary Lou Marzian and in the Senate by Senator Denise Harper-Angel;

  • In the judiciary, we scored a ruling preventing $10 million in state funds from being appropriated to a private, religion based institution that discriminates against our community;

  • And most recently, Governor Beshear courageously kept his campaign promise earlier this month to extend employment protections within state government.
