What is the petition amendment about?
The anti-gay constitutional amendment, if approved would amend the Massachusetts Constitution to define marriage as a union between a man and a women. This amendment would take away the right of same-sex couples to marry after January 1, 2009. Not only would this counter the long standing and honorable tradition of expanding rights with amendments to the Constitution, it would put fundamental rights up to the popular vote.
The Massachusetts and United States Constitutions both established Republics with guaranteed constitutional protections that ensure minority rights are not subjected to majority rule. This amendment attempts to undermine this principle by putting the rights of gays and lesbians on the ballot.
We urge you to tell legislators why you oppose taking marriage rights away by telling personal stories. Everybody gay or straight, old or young has a personal story to tell. Please share your thoughts.
