Last year, Oregon became an even better place to live, work and raise a family when Oregon's domestic partnership and anti-discrimination laws were passed. Oregon's domestic partnership law gives committed couples the legal recognition they need to care for one another, especially in a crisis. With the passage of the anti-discrimination law, it became illegal to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identitiy in housing, employment, and public accommodations.
But now, a small but well-organized group of anti-equality activists has filed an initiative to repeal the law. These individuals don't represent the values of most Oregonians... but they shouldn't be underestimated.
Basic Rights Oregon needs your help to ensure that our fellow Oregonians understand what's at stake. Please sign the Pledge to Defend Equality today, and take a stand for basic fairness.
I pledge to support basic fairness for all Oregonians.
Fairness is a basic Oregon value. And I believe every Oregon family should be able to realize their hopes and dreams, keep loved ones safe and secure, and live and work free from the sting of discrimination. No one's basic rights should be put up to a public vote.
Therefore, I will decline to sign any initiative petition seeking support for repealing the law.
Furthermore, in the event that opposition groups are successful in putting an initiative to repeal Oregon's domestic partnership law on the ballot, I will Defend Equality by voting NO in November 2008.
