Community Statement on Reparative Therapy

A Community Statement

Equality NC is proud to join with the local Equality Coalition in the Asheville area to call out proponents of so-called "reparative therapy" as Exodus International brought its national "ex-gay" conference to the area this July.

Join us in opposing this destructive event, and those like it, by signing the community statement below.

Full Petition Text:

We celebrate, affirm, and support LGBT citizens

We, the undersigned, celebrate, affirm, and support the diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity in our beloved communities of western North Carolina and beyond.

We reject "reparative therapy" (aimed at changing one's sexual orientation) as lacking scientific credibility, as ineffective and, indeed, as harmful to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender friends, family, and community members.

We note that the American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association, the American Counseling Association and many other professional associations have made similar conclusions and resolutions.

We open our hearts to each person attending the Exodus International conference at Ridgecrest Conference Center in Ridgecrest, NC July 15-20, 2008 and express our acceptance of you as you are.
