The short explanation of this alert was:
Dignity for All Students passes the Assembly, now it’s the State Senate’s turn.
On February 27 the Assembly continued its years-long trend of passing the Dignity for All Students Act by a huge bipartisan majority. It’s time for the State Senate to pass this important legislation NOW, and your letter can make the difference!
The Dignity for All Students Act seeks to ensure that all students in public schools have an environment free of harassment and discrimination based on race, national origin, ethnic group, religion, disability, sexual orientation, gender (including gender identity and expression), and sex.
Students in public schools can not afford to wait for these protections. Just last month, a 15 year-old California student named Lawrence King was murdered in the classroom by a fellow student in what appears to be a hate crime motivated by King’s perceived sexual orientation and gender expression. We cannot let New York become the next state where we lose a student to hate-based harassment and bullying.
