Sign our online resolution to let our elected officials know you support Hate Crimes Legislation in Michigan. Michigan Equality recognizes July as "Independence from Hate Crimes and Hate Speech Month." This resolution is part of an initiative to bring equality to all Michiganders and will be delivered to each Representative and Senator as they are lobbied for the passage of strong Hate Crimes legislation. Throughout the month of July, Michigan Equality will unveil educational information and legislative updates.
We, the voters of the State of Michigan, support the consideration and passage of an inclusive Hate Crimes Act.
We understand that Michigan currently has an Ethnic Intimidation Act on the books. The change that we ask in the current legislation is an amendment to the law, not a new law. Nor is it solely about gay rights; it's about being able to live without fear.
We propose that this amendment to the Ethnic Intimidation Act extend long overdue protections to lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgender persons who are victims of hate crimes.
Today we stand united against Hate Crimes and pledge to confront bigotry in any shape it forms.
