What's At Stake?
Letters to the editor- yes, I approve Ref. 71 and pledge to preserve the domestic partnership law
More talking points:
- Approving the domestic partnership law would affirm rights for families that we all want gay and lesbian families to have, such as pension rights for the partners of public sector employees and death benefits for the parners of gay and lesbian firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty.
- Domestic Partnerships are not equivalent to marriage equality. Approving Referendum 71 is a vote for legal and financial protections for Washington families.
- Approving the domestic partnership law would affirm rights for families that we all want gay and lesbian families to have, such as pension rights for the partners of public sector employees and death benefits for the partners of gay and lesbian firefighters and police officers killed in the line of duty.
- Gay and lesbian couples have children. In Washington state domestic partnerships are an important way for children of gay and lesbian couples to have the legal rights the children of married couples take for granted.
- The domestic partnership registry provides gay and lesbian couples the rights and responsibilities of marriage under State law. Approving Referendum 71 is a way to affirm the need for these rights and responsibilities for all Washington families.
- An overwhelming majority of Washington voters believe gay and lesbian couples and their children should have the legal protections married couples enjoy (Source University of Washington: Washington Poll), approving referendum 71 ensures these legal protections.
- Gay and lesbian people pay the same taxes; their families should be entitled to the same legal and financial protections, rights and responsibilities as any other family. We must approve referendum 71 to secure these protections for all Washington families.
- Religious liberty is one of the most important protections all Americans and Washingtonians enjoy. Neither domestic partnerships nor referendum 71 infringe on religious liberty. Just as they can today, faith traditions will always be able to decide for themselves what families they religiously recognize. Approving Referendum 71 protects religious liberty.
- Contrary to what anti-gay activists say, nothing about Referendum 71 affects curriculum in public schools. Approving Referendum 71 is not about schools, it is about legal and financial protections for Washington couples.
