Tell the Governor to sign the equality bill into law!

History will be made. The question remains which side will we be on.

Tell them it is time to end the segregation of gay and lesbian families, that all families count equally in New Hampshire and there should be one set of laws for everyone!

Talking Points

HB436 Marriage equality

  • Marriage is more than a collection of legal rights; it tells the community that two people love each other and are a family. Since everyone understands and respects this, it makes being married something important, something we aspire to, and something that protects us in daily life as well as times of crisis.
  • Civil unions are a legal status created solely for gay/lesbian couples. Evan if there were not the significant inequities in the way the law treats marriages and civil unions, the fact that a civil union remains a separate status for gay people represents real and powerful discrimination. Our constitution requires legal equality for all.
  • Thousands of NH children are being raised by gay and lesbian parents. These children understand the meaning and importance of marriage. Excluding gay/lesbian couples from marriage marks them and their children as less worthy than other citizens. Children of gay/lesbian couples are harmed when their families are treated as less worthy.
  • HB436 upholds freedom of religion. This bill is about civil marriage, and leaves decisions about religious ceremonies to faith leaders.

HB415 Anti-discrimination

  • This bill amends existing hate crime and non-discrimination laws to explicitly and uniformly protect all people regardless of their gender identity or gender expression, including transgender people.
  • NH law does not protect people from this form of discrimination and people in New Hampshire face high levels of discrimination and violence because of widespread prejudices about how "real men" or "real women" should look or act.
  • New Hampshire residents should not be fired from their job, evicted from their home, refused service at a restaurant or targeted for violence because of their appearance.
