HB 1590: Repeal marriage equality and civil unions.

BASIC TALKING POINTS

  • Loving committed couples are already married in New Hampshire and there has been no detrimental impact, the sky did not fall.

  • These couples and their children now enjoy equally the legal and societal benefits of marriage and that’s good for families and New Hampshire.

  • This bill leaves couples married but prevents other couples from marring.

  • Nobody believes this bill is going to be enacted into law. What is the real motivation here? Are people exploiting New Hampshire families for cheap political spin.

  • This is about taking away rights from gays and lesbians repealing marriage equality, pure and simple.

CACR 28 (Constitutional Amendment Concurrent Resolution): "Providing that the state shall only recognize the union of one man and one woman as marriage."  To pass, a constitutional amendment needs the support of three-fifths of both the House and the Senate, and then approval by two-thirds of state voters. Similar amendments were defeated in 2006 (Republican leadership), 2007 (Democratic leadership).

BASIC TALKING POINTS

·         Our Constitution has never and should never be amended to enshrine discrimination. Similar constitutional amendments were rejected in the last two legislative sessions, in 2006, under Republican leadership, and 2007 under Democratic leadership.

  • Loving committed couples are already married in New Hampshire and there has been no detrimental impact, the sky did not fall.

  • These couples and their children now enjoy equally the legal and societal benefits of marriage and that’s good for families and New Hampshire.

Let NH Vote: Conservative effort to pressure for passage of CACR 28 through non-binding town meeting resolutions stating: The citizens of New Hampshire should be allowed to vote on an amendment to the New Hampshire Constitution that defines “marriage”.

BASIC TALKING POINTS

·         This is a Political Action Committee

  • Loving committed couples are already married in New Hampshire and there has been no detrimental impact, the sky did not fall.

·         Those pushing the repeal vote say it’s a non-partisan issue, but the biggest supporters are conservative public officials, groups and parties. These are people who oppose the freedom to marry and who are using this important equality issue as a way to build turn-out for other conservative issues and canidates.

·         The group pushing this has yet to say who is behind paying for all of the signs, bumper stickers and other high-cost materials. Since none of the materials carry a disclaimer, we have no idea who is playing politics with New Hampshire civil liberties.

·         Conservative groups in New Hampshire have long opposed equal rights for all New Hampshire families. The repeal vote is just the latest in a long list of effort s to take away rights and repeal marriage equality.

·         We’re not surprised that opponents of equal family values are pushing these petitions, but it would be disappointing to let their bias take away the rights of other New Hampshire families.

New Hampshire has already settled this issue – in keeping with our strong tradition of civil liberties, we support marriage equality. Instead of pushing for a repeal vote, conservatives need to let us focus our attention on jobs and the economy.

·         Our representatives are elected to do just that – represent us. And they did. The conservative faction that opposes this and wants to project their personal values or bias on others can take it up during the election season, but right now they need to let the focus be on jobs and the economy.

§         In fact, conservatives didn’t want a vote on this issue to begin with, charging that the state should focus on other issues. Now that New Hampshire has deliberated and settled this issue as we should, it’s those who want a different outcome who are holding us up.

§         Repealing marriage equality isn’t going to help put New Hampshire families back to work or pay the rent. This repeal vote ruse is interfering with real public policy needs.

The Repeal Vote is an effort to allow outside money and influence to change a decision we made here in New Hampshire. Conservatives are using marriage equality as a Get Out the Vote tool for their other objectives.
