Help Ensure that Transgender-Inclusive Language is Not Removed from ENDA!
Last week, leadership in the House of Representatives announced they were moving forward with an Employment Nondiscrimination Act (ENDA) that would leave out protections for transgender people. This would mean that, even if the bill were to pass and become law, it would still be legal in the vast majority of states, including New York, to fire someone from their job simply because of their gender identity. This would leave not only transgender employees, but all employees vulnerable to discrimination at work just because they didn’t act masculine or feminine enough for the boss.
You changed the course of Congress. On Monday, the House leadership announced that the committee vote that was scheduled for this week was postponed.
But that doesn’t mean we’re out of the woods yet. We need to make sure that every single member of Congress has heard from constituents, urging him/her to support an ENDA that includes gender identity. We also need to make the specific request: oppose any effort to weaken the bill, including by stripping or modifying any of the transgender protections. There should be no compromise on whether some or all of our community will be included in this bill when it goes to the House or Senate floor for a vote. Removing this vital part of the bill leaves millions of Americans vulnerable to losing their job simply because of who they are.
