Greetings,
It's crushing that Maine voters rejected equal treatment
under the law on Tuesday! In an Associated Press story this
morning, our feelings were summarized as:
"Stunned and angry, national gay rights leaders Wednesday blamed
scare-mongering ads - and President Barack Obama's lack of
engagement - for a bitter election setback in Maine that could
alter the dynamics for both sides in the gay-marriage debate."
Regardless of the blame game in Maine, Tuesday's defeat at the
ballot box in Maine must serve as a wake-up call for all
lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people and our
supporters. It is a sharp reminder to New Mexicans that threats
to our civil rights lurk around every corner. Even if we pass
relationship recognition legislation, like Domestic Partnership
Rights in January 2010, our opponents could easily place the
issue on the November 2010 ballot.
It is time to take action. Volunteer with us and build
support for equality in New Mexico!

Though we expect the Courts eventually to answer this type of
injustice, we cannot wait for others to take action. We must act
now ourselves!
We must act locally! Give $100 to our campaign to gain Domestic
Partnership Rights for all New Mexicans.
EQNM has worked faithfully over the years to gain basic civil
rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals
and families as well as for all New Mexicans! We will continue
our battle until we gain domestic partnership rights for all New
Mexicans, and full marriage equality.
Sincerely,
Jordon Johnson
Interim Executive Director
