  • Equality Texas worked with Rep. Veasey's office to draft this legislation.
  • HB 616 would require the Attorney General to conduct a study of the effectiveness of the James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Act.
  • Since passage of the Hate Crimes Act in 2001, there have been over 1,800 crimes of bias and prejudice reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety. However, there have been only nine prosecutions under the Act
