Austin's Pride Texas "Sunrise" Brunch Announces Annise Parker as Keynote Speaker - Event is June 7th

Equality Texas Names Award Recipients for San Antonio Spirit of Texas Brunch

Equality Texas is pleased to announce the recipients of this year’s Becky Cross Anchor Award and the Advocate Award.  The recipients will be honored during Equality Texas’ Spirit of Texas Brunch on May 17th. The Becky Cross Anchor Award and the Advocate Award are awarded to San Antonio community members whose life’s work has improved the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Texans.

The 2009 Becky Cross Anchor Award will be presented to Roberto Flores and Daniel Graney.  The Advocate Award will be given to Bexar County 45th District Court Judge Barbara Nellermoe.

Flores and Graney have been life-long equality activists, for the past 17 years, in San Antonio. Both Roberto and Dan were singing members, as well as officers, of the Alamo City Men’s Chorale from 1994 through 2003.  Dan served on the Board of Directors of the San Antonio Black Tie Dinner, Inc., from 1997 to 1999 and was Dinner Co-Chair in 1999.

In 2000, Roberto and Dan were among a group of local LGBT activists who founded Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio (SDSA).  Roberto served as co-chair of SDSA from 2000-2001 and Dan served as co-chair from 2002-2005.  Roberto was re-elected co-chair in 2007 and is a member of the SDSA Board of Directors.  Actively involved in local Democratic Party politics, Roberto has been a Democratic precinct chair from 2000 to the present and both Roberto and Dan have been delegates to every State Democratic Convention since 2000.  Both are deputized voter registrars and have helped register scores of people as new voters.

In 2005, both Roberto and Dan participated in the No Nonsense In November campaign that sought the defeat of the discriminatory anti-marriage amendment to the Texas Constitution, as well as founded the San Antonio chapter of Soulforce, an organization that is dedicated to seeking freedom for LGBT people from religious and political oppression through the practice of relentless nonviolent resistance.

In January, 2006, Roberto was elected a member of the Board of Directors of Equality Texas. That same year, Dan became a member of the San Antonio Area HIV Health Services Planning Council.  Roberto and Dan are also members of the Alamo Business Council (ABC), an LGBT social organization.  In 2006, Roberto was elected male Co-Chair of Stonewall Democrats of San Antonio.  In 2008, Dan was elected President of Texas Stonewall Democratic Caucus.

Barbara Nellermoe was elected to the bench as a Judge to the 45th District Court in November 2002 to a four-year term effective January 1, 2003.  She previously served as corporate counsel for Clear Channel Communications, focusing on employment matters, as an administrator at St. Mary’s Law School, as staff attorney to Chief Justice Alma L. Lopez, and as law clerk to three federal district court judges. For ten years, she engaged in private practice, representing clients in environmental, banking, securities, and other types of commercial litigation.

Judge Nellermoe is the Editor in Chief of the San Antonio Lawyer magazine and past president of the Bexar County Women's Bar Association. Both organizations have recognized her contributions by honoring her with the Belva Lockwood Outstanding Lawyer Award and the SABA President's Award for Outstanding Service to the Bar, respectively.

In law school, she was chosen Editor in Chief of the St. Mary's Law Journal and has since published a number of scholarly legal articles.  The Texas Bar Foundation selected her article, Professional Responsibility and the Litigator, 28 ST. MARY´S LAW JOURNAL 443, as the Outstanding Law Review Article of 1997.

She serves on the board of the St. Luke's Lutheran Health Ministries Foundation, the Development Board of Texas Lutheran University, the UTSA College of Liberal & Fine Arts Advisory Council, and the board of Z-Place, a family center on the near west side which provides day care and recreation services.  She served as congregational president of St. John's Lutheran Church from 1994 to 1998.

Judge Nellermoe has been married since 1965 to John Nellermoe, an art professor at Texas Lutheran University. John also coached the TLU golf team for 13 years, including Cameron Beckman, who is on the PGA tour. Their daughter, Sara, is a TLU graduate and works for CBS in Minneapolis.
