Presentation of Equality Leadership Award to Mason Marriott-Voss

Mason Marriott-Voss is a young activist known for his strong voice and leadership on many social justice issues.  Most striking is that he is only 10 years old and already made an impact on the equality movement.

Mason first appeared at a legislative committee hearing when he was an infant, spoke at a rally at the Capitol when he was four, and this spring addressed a crowd of 3,000 at Austin City Hall to protest California's Proposition 8.

During this Legislative Session, Mason testified before the House Committee on Public Health in support of HB 2080, which would provide for accurate birth certificates for children with same-sex parents.

The Equality Leadership Award is given to Mason for his outstanding and courageous activism on behalf of equal rights.

Remarks on the 81st Legislative Session

Rep. Elliott Naishtat was elected to the District 49 seat in November, 1990.  He has been re-elected eight times and serves as a member of the Human Services Committee and the County Affairs Committee.

Representative Naishtat carried HB 861 this session which would provide competitive benefit plans for faculty and staff of the University of Texas and Texas A&M systems.

Remarks on the 81st Legislative Session

Rep. Mark Strama was elected to the District 50 seat in 2004. He serves on the Technology, Economic Development and Workforce Committee.

Representative Strama was the author of HB 1323 -Anti-Bullying and Harassment Bill - that defined cyber bullying and provided for the reporting of incidents by school districts, including incidents based on sexual orientation and gender identity/expression.

Keynote Address by the Honorable Annise Parker

This year we are honored to have Annise Parker, Houston City Controller and Houston Mayoral Candidate as our keynote speaker.  Before her election as City Controller, Ms. Parker served six years as a Houston City Councilmember, improving city government and focusing on quality of life issues.  She distinguished herself by creating Houston's $20 million Rainy Day Fund, imposing tighter regulations for inner city development and establishing Houston's non-discrimination policy.
