The mission of EQUALITY ALABAMA is to advance full equality and civil rights for all the people of Alabama through education, advocacy and actions as appropriate under the provisions for nonprofit organizations.

 

Education

·         Participate as a founding member of the Alabama Safe Schools Coalition

·         Provide email updates to members of our database

·         Survey and report results regarding school and workplace climate in Alabama

·         Seek opportunities for informing on equal rights conditions and needs in the state

 

Advocacy

·         Support only fully inclusive local, state, and federal legislation

·         Work with legislators and government officials to insure fair and equal treatment for all

·         Recognize and report instances of discrimination and hate which challenge equal rights

·         Work with national and other state organizations to gain equal rights on the federal level

 

Actions

·         Lobby legislators for passage of fully inclusive bills, such as hate crimes legislation

·         Sponsor annual equality program for education and celebration of progress

·         Provide web-based source for information, resources, and actions for equal rights

·         Operate Ken Baker Equality Alabama Education Center in Montgomery

·         Respond to requests for comment and/or assistance regarding equal rights violations

·         Facilitate inter-organization cooperation in advancing equal rights agenda

·         Co-sponsor annual Hate Crimes Vigil in Montgomery

·         Participate in rally opposing federal Defense of Marriage Act

·         Facilitate operation of Alabama Safe Schools Coalition through participation and funding

 

During the upcoming year, Equality Alabama will:

·         Team with PFLAG and the Alabama Gender Alliance for a first Alabama Lobby Day

·         Continue support of the Workplace Equality Project

·         Initiate a Transgender Equality Project

·         Continue participation and support of the Alabama Safe Schools Coalition

·         Launch a new website with the style and responsiveness of the Equality Weekend site
