Dear Friend,

The reality of our loss on Election Day -- when Californians voted to enshrine discrimination into the state's constitution by eliminating the fundamental right to marry for LGBT people -- is still difficult to accept. It is especially difficult to write you, who have given so very much of yourself, without words of victory. The gratitude we -- and everyone who has worked on this campaign -- have for you has only deepened in these past few days as your offers of support continue pouring in.

We all know that the path to achieving equality has never been easy, or without much sacrifice and loss. While we are grappling with an incredible sense of sadness in this moment, we have learned so much through this particular struggle about what work we still have to do.

And we have already taken steps to move this struggle forward. As you likely know, NCLR, Lambda Legal, and the ACLU filed a lawsuit with the California Supreme Court, challenging the constitutionality of Prop 8. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Equality California and 6 same-sex couples who did not marry before Tuesday's election but would like to be able to marry now.

As a major donor to the No on Prop 8 campaign, we want to brief you on what is happening now, and what we expect will happen next. As we move forward and plan our next steps, we want you to be among the first to know.
