Last week the Senate voted 21 to 14 in favor of the marriage bill without amendment. The bill now goes to the House, which is expected to vote early this week. Please contact your Representative immediately. Urge them to vote YES on the marriage bill and NO on a referendum amendment.
Dear [ Decision Maker ] , I am your constituent. I urge you to vote YES on the marriage bill, and NO on any referendum amendment. Amending the bill to require voter approval is wrong for many reasons. Rights of Minority Groups Should Be Protected: Minority rights should never be put out to a popular vote. We should learn from our history: if the question of inter-racial marriage had been put out to a popular vote, it would likely have failed. Ballot Questions Simplify Complex Issues: In a referendum campaign, thoughtful debate gives way to bumper stickers and ad campaigns. This issue deserves careful consideration and resolution through the legislative process. Role of the Legislature: When legislators take the oath of office they swear to uphold the Constitution. Voters elect them to take leadership in protecting everyone's rights, including the rights of minority groups. Legislators should not abdicate their responsibility to the Constitution by sending a civil rights bill out for popular vote. Process in Place for Citizen Participation: In Maine the referendum process consistently has been used to undermine the rights of gay and lesbian people. While the people may have a right to use that process, the Legislature should not facilitate it. Sincerely,
Sincerely, |
