Give President Obama a Piece of Your Mind
Give a voice to your feelings and keep the heat turned up. Tell President Obama how you feel about his performance thus far on LGBT civil rights. Urge him to step up to the plate and be the "fierce advocate" we were promised he would be!
Dear [ Decision Maker ] , As someone who cares about fairness for all families, I urge you to do more to end discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. While I appreciate the many challenges you have as President of the United States, it does not excuse your inaction on LGBT civil rights. I am offended that you have done nothing to end discharges under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and that your Justice Department has obnoxiously defended the Defense of Marriage Act when it did not need to do so. There will never be a convenient time to address pervasive societal discrimination against LGBT people. Take action now! I urge you to cease discharges under DADT. Work to pass an Employment Non-Discrimination Act that includes our entire community, and go one step further to address comprehensive anti-discrimination protections in housing and public accommodations. Put real muscle behind proposals in Congress that would make lives better for families headed by same-sex couples, such as the Uniting American Families Act, Family Leave Insurance Act, Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligations Act, and Tax Equity for Health Plan Beneficiaries Act. Better yet, recognize that you can uproot this discrimination -- not just poke around it -- by supporting the freedom to marry for all families. Please be the fierce advocate you promised!
Sincerely, |
