EQMD Phonebanks for Marriage Equality this
Sunday!
Many of you have been paying attention to what is happening
in Maine with the "No on 1" campaign. This will not only
determine if marriage equality is maintained in Maine, but also
send a very loud statement to the entire country. That is why it
is so important that Marylanders get involved.
The Maine election is five days away and the
polls show that the race is extremely close.
Equality Maryland is holding a phonebank in Baltimore
on this Sunday, November 1st. We will help out our Maine
counterparts by making calls to Maine voters to educate them and
encourage them to protect the right for all people to marry the
person they love.
Just a couple hours of your time will help in this important
fight! We will provide a script and basic instructions. Feel
free to grab a friend (or two) and bring them with you.
Please also bring your cell phone to use. Most cell
phone plans include unlimited weekend and evening
calling.
WHEN:
- Sunday, November 1st from 10:00 am - 6:00 pm (two-hour
shifts: 10 - 12, 12 - 2, 2 - 4 and 4 - 6)
WHERE:
The GLBT Community Center of Baltimore and Central Maryland
(241 West Chase Street, Baltimore, MD)
SIGN UP! If you would like to participate in the
Equality Maryland phone bank for "No on 1," please contact us at
morgan@equalitymaryland.org.
- Your message should include your name, a telephone number,
and time(s) you are able to make calls.
This is about more than just Maine. This is about
making a loud statement across this nation that we are moving
forward in the fight for equal rights and protections for all
people!

Inclusive Hate Crimes Law
Signed by President Obama

"Equality Maryland commends President
Obama for signing the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr.
Hate Crimes Prevention Act into law. This is a
tremendous victory for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender community,” said Morgan Meneses-Sheets,
Executive Director. “Hate crimes differ from other
crimes in that they target a whole community as opposed to just
an individual victim. Hate crimes are intended to cause fear
among an entire group of people leaving the victim and others in
their group feeling isolated, vulnerable and unprotected.
This law sends a strong message and provides local law
enforcement agencies with the resources needed to investigate
and prosecute these heinous crimes.”
