EQUALITY MARYLAND SUPPORTS PASSAGE OF THE EQUAL BENEFITS BILL BY THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY COUNCIL

Bill Rally scheduled for Monday, November 2, 2009 - 12:30 pm

County Council Building

100 Maryland Avenue, Rockville, MD

3rd Floor Conference Room

Baltimore - Equality Maryland supports the Equal Benefits Bill proposed by Montgomery County Councilmember Nancy Navarro. Under current law, Montgomery County Code § 33-22 grants equal benefits to a County employee’s same sex domestic partner as are provided to the marital partner of a County employee. The Equal Benefits Bill proposed by Councilmember Navarro, would simply extend the requirement for equal same-sex benefits to the domestic partners of employees of contractors doing business with Montgomery County.

“We are grateful to Councilmember Navarro and her colleagues on the Montgomery County Council for taking a stand for fairness by promoting equal access to important rights and benefits with contractors doing business with the county,” said Equality Maryland’s Executive Director, Morgan Meneses-Sheets. "Passing the Equal Benefits Bill would send a strong signal that Montgomery County is ready for full marriage equality to come to Maryland.”

A press conference is scheduled for November 2, 2009 at 12:30 pm in the Third Floor Conference Room of the Montgomery County Office Building. Ms. Sheets will join Councilmember Navarro along with her colleagues on the council for the introduction of the Equal Benefits Bill on Monday.
