Save HIV Prevention & Care Funding

In the face of budget shortfalls, the North Carolina Legislature is proposing to eliminate the HIV Medicaid Case Management program. This program provides crucial support to people living with HIV, helping them access medical care, medications, and the support services needed to live healthier lives. The purpose of the Medicaid HIV Case Management program is to assure that people living with HIV have access to and maintain their medical care. Already the Medicaid HIV Case Management program has been removed from the state budget. We need to call legislators and let them know how important this program is to those living with HIV and ask them to return the program and its funding to the state budget. It is likely that additional budget cuts to HIV programs will be proposed, and we must speak out in support of state HIV prevention funding. These programs work constantly to prevent the spread of HIV by assuring that we can all access HIV testing, and then receive care. When people don't know their HIV status, they may unknowingly transmit the virus to others, creating a serious public health concern. We must keep testing and prevention programs in place. Each year, approximately 2,000 new people are infected with HIV in North Carolina. An additional 25% of those living with HIV are not aware that they have the disease. HIV prevention education, testing, and care services help keep people healthy, get those who are HIV positive into medical care, and reduce the chances of transmission to others.
