Domestic Partnership Thank You Campaign

Domestic partnership registration has begun in Washington state.  For the first time in history, immediate protections for same-sex couples and vulnerable senior couples can now be secured through the registration process. It's important that the legislative leaders, the Governor, and the Secretary of State know how much you appreciate the work down to achieve these basic rights - even as we continue to push for full marriage equality. Your state representatives, state senator, the Governor, and the Secretary of State will get a copy of the e-mail so they will know of your appreciation AND also that you support full marriage equality.

Please take a moment to send this important "thank you" to your elected leaders.

Subject: The Domestic Partnership Law is Good for Washington Families

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I want you to know how important I believe it is that families in Washington can now protect themselves by registering as domestic partners. I am pleased that the Washington legislature passed this bill the first year it was introduced, the Governor signed it joyously, and the Secretary of State of State implemented the law efficiently.

The Domestic Partnership law provides some immediate protections to same-sex couples and seniors during times of crisis.

While the Domestic Partnership law provides several important protections, nothing short of marriage will give same-sex couples the dignity and legal equality and protections they need and deserve.

Again, thank you for making Washington a better place for families.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Today (July 23) domestic partnership registration begins!  Through this registry, Washington LGBT families will have immediate emergency protections--e.g., the right to visit their partners in the hospital and inherit property, even if no will exists. The domestic partnership law also extends these protections to older, unmarried couples, if one partner is over 62 years of age.

Almost every day we've heard of problems that arise because same-sex couples have not been able to protect their families. Because this bill has become law, through registering as domestic partners, immediate protections are now available. We will continue the struggle for full marriage equality. This is the first step in the journey, and it's a chance to educate Washington State voters about the importance of full protections for ALL of the state's families. Children of LGBT parents deserve the same legal protections the children of legally married parents currently enjoy. Show the governor how much you appreciate her support for the LGBT community.
