GENDA Passes Assembly! Thank Your Assemblymember
The New York State Assembly just voted 102-33 to pass the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) and amend the state’s human rights law to include anti-discrimination protections based on gender identity and expression. This is the first time that GENDA has ever made it to the floor of the Assembly for a vote!
Take pride in this victory! Our community—and specifically the GENDA Coalition—has worked hard to make sure this bill was understood by the New York State Assembly to be necessary in order to end the discrimination that transgender New Yorkers face on a daily basis. The Assembly vote is an important first step towards making GENDA law in New York State.

We now need you to take a moment to thank your Assemblymember for voting for GENDA. We often call on our elected officials to act on issues that are important to us, and we need to be sure that they know we appreciate what they’ve done once they’ve acted. In voting to provide equality and justice for transgender New Yorkers, the Assembly has once again demonstrated that it is the leader on civil rights in our state.
GENDA now has the support of the Governor and the Assembly. Our focus now turns to the New York State Senate, where GENDA currently has 17 co-sponsors and 27 supporters, according to our Legislative Scorecard.

Thank you for voting in support of the Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA). Because of your vote, transgender New Yorkers are one step closer to being protected from discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodation and other areas of everyday life.
The State Assembly has long been the legislative chamber in New York that has led the way in extending civil rights to its citizens, and the bipartisan vote in support of this bill demonstrates that this is still the case.
The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community and our allies recognize the Assembly's commitment to providing equality and justice for all New Yorkers. Again, thank you for standing up for what is right and voting to pass this vitally important bill.
