Write Your State Senator to Tell Them Supporting Marriage Equality is Important to You

You might have heard the rumors that surfaced late last week that marriage for same-sex couples may have been used as a bargaining chip in Senate leadership negotiations. As we said and editorial boards across the state wrote in newspapers such as the Albany Times-Union, Daily News and El Diario La Prensa, it is never acceptable for any community’s civil rights to be used as a bargaining chip in any political leadership battle.

It’s important that presumptive New York Senate President Pro-Tempore Malcolm Smith and your State Senator hear from you that you want them to support and advocate for marriage equality for same-sex couples and that marriage equality should be off the table in Senate leadership negotiations.

Subject: Your Support for Marriage Equality is Important to Me Now More than Ever!

Dear [decision maker name automatically inserted here],

In this very exciting time for New York, I am writing to ask for your support of legislation allowing same-sex couples to marry. Same-sex couples and their families deserve the 1324 rights and protections that come with a New York marriage license.

In doing what it takes to put together new majority in the State Senate, at no time should any community's civil rights be used as a bargaining chip in leadership negotiations.

I am looking forward to working with you to build the support needed to pass the marriage equality bill in the State Senate, and then bringing the bill to the Senate floor as soon as we have the votes.

At the beginning of this legislative session and throughout the year, I will be watching to see how you advocate on this issue that means so much to me.

Sincerely,

[Your Name]
