Equality & Justice Day 2009 - The Time is Now

Tuesday, April 28—Albany New York

We’ve been telling you for a while now that 2009 would be an extremely important year for advancing legislation that is critical for LGBT New Yorkers. With a new pro-LGBT majority in the State Senate and having learned the lessons of Prop 8, our community and our allies are in the best position we’ve ever been in to pass a marriage equality bill, a transgender civil rights bill and a bill that would provide safe schools for LGBT youth.

What does this mean for you?

It means that the time is now for you to get involved. We need you to come to Albany on April 28 to let your elected representatives know that you expect them to act on these issues now!

A pro-LGBT Majority in the State Senate means that we have a chance—for the first time ever—to pass these key bills, and we’re optimistic that we can even do it THIS YEAR if we all do the needed work. We know we have the support of the New York State Assembly and Governor Paterson, but we still need a handful of votes in the Senate to pass these crucial bills. By coming up to Albany and talking with your State Senator, you can make the difference. We’ve seen it happen before when the work that was done on E&J Day had a direct impact on passing the marriage bill in the Assembly in 2007 and the GENDA bill in the Assembly in 2008.

By learning from the mistakes that were made with Prop 8 in California—by not being complacent and not staying on the sidelines—you can take this day to get involved in New York and make marriage equality for same-sex couples a reality! You can have a direct impact on making sure that a transgender person is never again fired from their job in New York just for being who they are. And you can help to make sure that New York’s schools are safe places for LGBT youth.

You will join 1400 LGBT New Yorkers and our allies from organized labor, communities of faith and businesses from all across New York—and when our elected officials see our community and our allies in these numbers, they pay attention.

Remember—no one can replace you on this incredibly important day. No one can tell your story or be your voice to your elected officials. If you have been wondering when the right time is to get involved with LGBT equality, the time is now. Register, save the date, get on the bus and help us make history in Albany on April 28.
