Maine Becomes Fifth State to Legalize Marriage Equality for Same-Sex Couples

The Pride Agenda has just released the following statement from Executive Director Alan Van Capelle:

May 6, 2009 – “We are thrilled that the Governor of Maine acted immediately to sign marriage equality legislation into law following its passage by the state legislature.  We congratulate Maine for joining Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa and Vermont in providing equality for same-sex couples and their families.

Three legislatures in the Northeast have passed marriage equality legislation in just the last few weeks.  We have the opportunity this springtime to make New York proud by having our state legislature stand with our neighbors to make marriage legal for gay and lesbian families. We urge Governor Paterson, Senate Majority Leader Smith and Assembly Speaker Silver to work with our elected representatives in the Assembly and Senate to get this done by June so we can stand and be proud like the rest of the Northeast.”
