Follow Mayor Duffy's lead: write the Democrat & Chronicle to let them know you support marriage for same-sex couples!

In a poignant op-ed in this past weekend’s Democrat & Chronicle, Rochester Mayor Robert Duffy unequivocally stated his support for marriage for same-sex couples and urged the State Senate to do the same and pass this important legislation. Mayor Duffy joins a growing number of local and statewide elected officials who have chosen to make their stance of the side of justice clear in this historic fight for equality.

Mayor Duffy’s opinion stands in stark contrast to that of the Democrat & Chronicle’s own editorial board, which last week wrote that civil unions were a preferable alternative to marriage for same-sex couples. The Democrat & Chronicle used some of the backwards language of the religious right when they argued for a solution that in their words “does not necessitate the redefinition of marriage, an institution that predates not only American but recorded history as the union of man and woman.”

It’s time for us to make it clear to the Democrat & Chronicle that this way of thinking is severely outdated and that civil unions will never be equal to full marriage equality under the law. Please click here to send a letter to the Democrat & Chronicle letting them know why you support marriage for same-sex couples. When the paper’s editorial board hears from hundreds of local residents who do not agree with their opinion, they will understand that their views do not represent those of the majority of Rochesterians.
