Sample Letter for Campaign

Subject:

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I urge you to reject Senate Joint Resolution 7 when it is considered by the Indiana House of Representatives.

This proposal won't "protect traditional families," but will cause real harm to real families, young and old, gay and straight. SJR 7 will damage Indiana's weak economy even further, discouraging progressive corporations from locating here, undercutting the successful recruitment policies of Indiana businesses and universities, and sending a message to bright, talented individuals inside and outside Indiana that an entire class of citizens and their families are unwelcome.

Sincerely,

Background Information

Senate Joint Resolution 7, the Marriage Discrimination Amendment has been reintroduced by Sen. Brandt Hershman (R - Monticello).  This is the second phase of a four-year process to send it to the voters in a public ballot initiative.

The Indiana Senate has passed SJR 7.  The House of Representatives will be considering SJR 7 in early April.

Make it clear to your State Representative that:

  • The Marriage Amendment discriminates against all couples in committed relationships who are not married.
  • The Marriage Amendment permanently writes discrimination into the Indiana Constitution.
  • The Marriage Discrimination Amendment is just an attempt to distract Hoosiers from the greater issues at hand.
  • The Marriage Discrimination Amendment threatens current and future economic development.
  • The Marriage Discrimination Amendment violates every Hoosier’s basic right to fairness and equality.
