Subject: SJR 15, The Marriage Discrimination Amendment

Dear [ Decision Maker ] ,

I urge you to vote no on Senate Joint Resolution 15.

Our state and nation are in the worst economic situation since the Great Depression. Hoosiers are concerned about their jobs, healthcare, their children's schools, not marriage by gay couples.

Marriages by gay couples are already illegal under state law and passing an amendment to the state constitution is both redundant and unnecessary.

SJR-15 would tie the hands of both future legislatures and the judiciary, forever enshrining discrimination into the Indiana Constitution.

Passing SJR-15 would harm Hoosier families for generations to come.

Please vote no on SJR-15.

Sincerely,

Background Information

SJR-15, the Marriage Discrimination Amendment, is once again before the General Assembly.  Passage of SJR-15 by the Senate will keep this harmful legislation in play and and set the stage for the Indiana Legislature to enshrine bigotry into our state Constitution, affecting thousands of Hoosier families. Indiana Equality and its coalition partners were successful in stopping progress on SJR-15 in 2008 in the House of Representatives. It is unclear as to its final fate in 2009.

Please ask your Senator to vote NO on SJR-15; the Marriage Discrimination Amendment is wrong for Indiana. Make it clear to the State Senate that:

  • The Marriage Discrimination Amendment is just an attempt to distract Hoosiers from the greater issues at hand, such as such as consideration of a biennium state budget that minimizes the real pain being felt by Hoosiers in the current economic climate
  • The Marriage Discrimination Amendment threatens current and future economic development
  • The Marriage Discrimination Amendment permanently writes discrimination into the Indiana
  • The Marriage Discrimination Amendment violates every Hoosier’s basic right to fairness and equality
  • The Marriage Amendment discriminates against all couples in committed relationships who are not married
