Become a Key Advocate for Equality

Indiana Equality Action's Key Advocates program seeks to create a positive working relationship with legislators in the Indiana General Assembly by means of constituent-lobbyists, called Key Advocates. The Key Advocates put a “human face” on the LGBT/Allied community and maintain contact with legislators to promote specific issues.

Tasks of a Key Advocate for Equality

  • Developing a personal/professional relationship with a given legislator – if possible, outside the context of lobbying for particular LGBT issues.
  • Attending trainings to become knowledgeable about lobbying and the complexities of the issues pursued by IE Action.
  • Developing an understanding of the legislator's personal interests and political needs.
  • Meeting with or communicating with the legislator to discuss those issues key to particular IE Action initiatives.
  • Actively seeking out opportunities to interact with the legislator in an informal setting – i.e. local social settings, political forums, official events, meetings with local constituents.
  • Recruiting local LGBT persons or Allies who can help lobby the legislator.
  • Participating in the annual Lobby Day, bringing constituents to speak with the legislator in the Statehouse.
  • A training session for Key Advocates will be held this fall and will cover everything you need to know.  More information about this training will be sent later this summer.
