Dear Supporter,

The Kentucky Fairness Alliance is proud to
support a nearby screening of the award-winning documentary
"FREEHELD."
Tuesday, October 14 6:30 p.m.
(CST) Mason Hall Auditorium Murray State University
(MSU) Free Admission
This Academy Award winning film by Cynthia Wade
looks at fairness, and lack thereof, in the culture wars.
It chronicles the dying wishes
of policewoman Lt. Laurel Hester, who wants to leave her pension
benefits to her life partner, Stacie, so Stacie can afford to
keep their house. Laurel is told she cannot do that as she and
Stacie are not husband and wife. After spending a lifetime
fighting for justice for other people, Laurel, a veteran New Jersey
detective, launches a final battle for justice.
“‘Freeheld’ is simply an amazing
documentary, a true piece of unscripted reality, with all its
blemishes and beauty intact,” according to Edge Boston,
who presents gay news and entertainment to Bostonians. “It
is a documentary that pays fitting tribute to a true hero, a
woman who refused to compromise and who ultimately helped to
secure for all of us a little bit more of the equality we all
richly deserve.”
The MSU Student Alliance, the
MSU Women’s Center, and MSU’s Institutional LGBT
Liaison Jody Cofer are sponsoring the film’s
showing.
A
panel
discussion will follow the “Freeheld”
showing. The panelists are Dr. Bill Allbritten, director
of MSU’s Counseling and Testing Center, Dr. Ann Beck,
associate professor in MSU’s Department of Government, Law
and International
Affairs, Ms. Llena Chavis, lecturer in the Department of
Social Work, Criminal Justice, and Gerontology, Dr. Reika Ebert,
associate professor in MSU’s Department of Modern Languages,
and Ms. Teresa Ray, senior journalism major at MSU.
See you at the
movies!
The
Ampersand symbolizes the solidarity we are building through Friends &
Family, and suggests the inclusiveness we are working
toward. It reflects the idea that no one individual, legislator,
organization, or city can carry all the water for equality. Our
success lies in our solidarity.
