Dear Supporter,

This week a substitute teacher at West Jessamine High School in Nicholasville taunted and bullied a student because of the student's sexual orientation.

Ashley Bressler was ridiculed while in class simply because she is a lesbian.  Kentucky Fairness Alliance sends kudos to Ashley’s student peers who reportedly took no part in the teacher's shameful behavior.

Principal Ed Jones acted quickly when made aware of the situation.  Ashley’s mother, Shelly Sowell, was told that the substitute teacher will no longer be at West Jessamine High School, but her daughter would face in-school suspension for her response in the situation.  Ashley reportedly responded to the teacher’s actions with name calling and by walking out of the classroom.  She has admitted she handled the situation poorly.

When Chad Hundley, KFA Board member and resident of Lexington, was first made aware of this situation by Ashley’s mom it was a stark reminder that these situations still happen today in our own backyards.  “We must continue to educate others of the importance of creating safe environments for our children in their schools and for them as well later on in life when they enter the workforce,” Hundley said.

In fairness,

Your KFA Team!
