Dear Fairness Supporter,

Tomorrow you have a great opportunity! Your region of Kentucky is one place where fair-minded voters can send a strong message to Frankfort!

We're talking about your race for State Representative in Kentucky's 54th House District, which covers Boyle and Washington Counties. Here are the Fairness Facts about the incumbent and the challenger.

The incumbent is Mike Harmon (R-Junction City). Rep. Harmon is one of Frankfort's staunchest anti-gay legislators. Here is his track record on Fairness issues.

  • Sponsored the Civil Wrongs Amendment (HB 226, 2006), which would have banned the inclusion of sexual orientation and gender identity in discrimination laws.
  • Sponsored the Anti-Gay Foster Care & Adoption Bill (HB 661, 2004), which would have prohibited gay and bisexual people, and even unmarried straight couples from becoming adoptive or foster parents.
  • Voted for the Anti-Marriage Amendment (SB 245, 2004).
  • According to his responses to the Project Vote Smart 2006 Survey: opposes civil unions, does not support hate crimes legislation including sexual orientation, does not support adding sexual orientation to Kentucky's discrimination laws.
  • According to his responses to the Kentucky Candidate Information Survey, disagrees with allowing singles and same-sex couples to adopt children, disagrees with banning institutions from receiving state funding if they discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation.
  • According to the Danville Advocate-Messenger, opposes partner benefits at our state universities.

The challenger is David Sparrow (D-Danville). His public statements on Fairness issues are limited.

  • According to his responses to the Project Vote Smart 2006 Survey, he is undecided on civil unions, supports hate crimes legislation including sexual orientation, and supports adding sexual orientation to Kentucky's discrimination laws.
  • On the issue of domestic partner benefits at state universities, Sparrow told the Danville Advocate Messenger: "I think that, to be fair, you have to make that available across the board. When you look at all the situations out there, you have to learn to be tolerant."
