Dear friend,

Tomorrow, Saturday, January 24, Prayers for Bobby will premiere on Lifetime Television. Academy Award®-nominated actress Sigourney Weaver stars in this Lifetime Original Movie, based on a true story and Leroy Aarons’ book of the same name. The film tells the story of Mary Griffith, a profoundly religious wife and mother who begins to question her faith after the suicide of her gay son. Ultimately, with the posthumous acceptance of her son’s homosexuality, Mary draws strength and comfort from the gay community and becomes an advocate for gay rights. Trailer

Nearly 30% of Kentuckians identify as Southern Baptist and an even larger percentage identify as evangelical. While some of our strongest allies come from the faith community, so do some of the most harmful and hurtful messages about who we are and how we are to be treated. Those messages create a culture that perpetuates the very struggles portrayed in Prayers for Bobby, and make the story particularly relevant in Kentucky.
