Greetings,
Join us in celebrating the Kentucky House of
Representative’s passage of House Bill 280.
Yesterday, the
KY House passed this piece of legislation, known to the
fair-minded community as the “Hospital Visitation Bill”, by a
vote of 93-7 during their consent orders.
This legislation will protect families and loved ones by
allowing patients in health facilities to designate another
adult to be treated as family by hospital staff. This will alleviate the
fear of being separated, keep families together at times of
medical crisis, and save Kentuckians from being forced to
misrepresent their relationships in times of crisis.
Other states that have
adopted similar legislation include New
York, West Virginia,
and Wisconsin.
Place a quick
call to thank Representatives Marzian, Palumbo, Watkins, and
Westrom for co-sponsoring HB 280. You can leave your message for the
Representatives by calling the Legislative Message Line at
800-372-7181.
It is quick, easy to do, and much needed. Fair-minded legislators
need to know that their work on these matters is greatly
valued.
The bill now moves to the KY Senate where we are hopeful it
will receive timely consideration.
In fairness, Your KFA Team!
PS - You might recall, last month KFA Vice-Chair Mike Handley
participated in an event with the University of Louisville's
School of Medicine. On March 11, 2009, Vice-Chair Handley
will again be participating in a similar event with the
University of Kentucky's College of Medicine. The event is
being organized by the American Student Medical Association and
UK to discuss LGBT issues as they pertain to
healthcare. It will be held at the UK Medical Center
from 12:00-2:00 p.m. (EST). We again ask LGBT people for
any stories (good or bad) that relate to your medical
treatment. Please share your experiences with us by email and, yes, you can indicate that
you wish your name to be left off anything used.
