On
Saturday, the KFA Foundation Board of Directors decided that we
will again be awarding the Jason Johnson
Scholarship for the 2009-2010 academic year. In
addition, we will be awarding two more scholarships to bright,
energetic individuals continuing their education AND speaking
out for fairness. The KFA Foundation continues to
recognize education as the key to strong social
progress and that educational opportunities should be open
and available to everyone. Sadly, that isn’t always
the case.
In addition to the Jason Johnson
Scholarship, named for an honor student expelled from the
University of the Cumberlands in 2006 because he was gay, the
Mark England Scholarship will be awarded. This is
in recognition of Mark England, businessman and social activist
in Louisville, for his
long-time contributions to fairness.
For the third scholarship, we
need your help! Who do you want it named
after? This
individual should be someone who has made great strides for
fairness and that the fair-minded community can take pride in
calling a Kentuckian! Help us name the new scholarship by
sending us a short statement of why that individual should hold
this honor. You should email your suggestion to us by Monday,
April 13. We want to make the application for all
three of these opportunities available shortly
following.
These scholarships, valued at
$1500 each, will be awarded this fall based on social,
emotional, and financial need, as well as scholastic aptitude
and leadership potential. The selection committee will
again place special emphasis on students who have lost the
financial support of their families and/or communities as a
result of revealing their sexual orientation or gender
identity.
In fairness,
Your KFA
Team
