Dear MEGA Supporter,
Today, something extraordinary happened. President
Obama signed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes
Prevention Act into law!
This is a huge victory — and one that would not have
been possible without the activism of millions of people
who fought for the passage of this bill. After more than a
decade, the inclusive hate crimes bill we've fought so hard for
has been signed by the president into law.
This is the first time ANY federal equality
measure protecting LGBT rights has become law.
The Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes
Prevention Act will provide critical federal resources to
state and local agencies to equip local officers with the tools
they need to prosecute hate crimes and give LGBT people recourse
when they are victims of violent attacks.
Federally, we are on a positive course to pass the Employment
Nondiscrimination Act, and to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and
the Defense of Marriage Act. These federal measures are critical
in our efforts toward full equality. But, rest assured, we will
not forget all there is to do to keep the LGBT residents of
Georgia safe and free from discrimination.
Take this day to celebrate our huge victory for equality!
Best wishes,
Kathy Kelly
