Arguments heard in landmark marriage case; gay couples and their families await ruling Today, the Iowa Supreme Court heard arguments in the landmark Varnum v. Brien case that could clear the way for committed gay and lesbian couples to marry in Iowa. "Committed gay and lesbian couples across Iowa have been waiting a long time for this day," said Carolyn Jenison, Executive Director of One Iowa. "Today's arguments give us hope that these couples may soon be able to share the protections, security, and dignity of marriage. Today, we are one step closer to making that a reality for them and their families." As the Iowa Supreme Court heard the legal arguments that favor marriage for gays and lesbians, recent developments point to growing public support for legal recognition of same-sex couples in Iowa. According to a recent University of Iowa poll, nearly 60% of Iowans favor legal recognition for gay and lesbian couples. Many notable Iowans, including two former Lieutenant Governors have joined the chorus of voices speaking out in favor of marriage equality. State Senator Matt McCoy responded to today's arguments by referring to marriage equality as "the civil rights issue of our time." In support of the case, One Iowa has engaged in an unprecedented grassroots effort to educate Iowans about marriage for gay and lesbian couples. Public forums and house parties have reached thousands of Iowans across the state. "We're excited that this case has sparked a geniune discussion about the freedom to marry in Iowa," said Jenison. "We'll continue this discussion across Iowa as the Court prepares for their decision." In the months ahead, gay and lesbian Iowans and their families eagerly await a ruling from the Court. "My daughter grew up with the hope that she would find one person to marry and build a life with," said Linda Trudeau from Ames. "Why should my daughter and other committed couples in Iowa be denied that opportunity?" For additional information on the Varnum v.
