Dear Friend,
Last July, the Personnel, Intergovernmental
and Annexation Committee of the Memphis City Council voted to
delay hearing new non-discrimination legislation protecting LGBT
employees from unfair treatment in the workplace until Tuesday,
Nov. 3 following the retirement of former Mayor W.W.
Herenton.
With only a few weeks in office, Mayor AC
Wharton and his administration opted to postpone introduction of
TEP’s proposed non-discrimination legislation to the
Council’s Personnel Committee pending a review of its
impact. Mayor Wharton plans to examine several facets of
city government including human resource policies. The new
Mayor has assembled an impressive transition team to assist him
with this review.
The Tennessee Equality Project welcomes
Mayor Wharton’s thoughtful approach to this important
matter and looks forward to working with his administration and
the Memphis City Council in returning this legislation to the
Council’s agenda. Mayor Wharton supported similar
legislation introduced to the Shelby County Commission when he
was County Mayor.
As the new administration and the City
Council prepares for this legislation, TEP continues to gather
new voices of support for LGBT inclusive
workplace protections. No employee should fear losing
their job because they are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or
transgender. Your help is needed in keeping our city government
accountable to its citizens.
Take action by
asking your club, organization, church, or neighborhood
association to endorse LGBT inclusive workplace protections for
the City of Memphis. Contact TEP’s Shelby
County Committee for details at ShelbyCounty@tnequalityproject.com. We’ll
send a representative to discuss the legislation with you.
Thanks for all that you do to advance equality in
Memphis and Shelby County.
Sincerely,
Jonathan
Cole Board Secretary and Chair of TEP’s Shelby County
Committee
